APRIL 11th 2002 – (15 years ago)

Limerick FC defeated Derry City 3-2 on penalties at the Brandywell to win the League Cup for only the third time in their history.

A penalty in the 71st minute from star striker Liam Coyle gave the Candy Stripes a one nil win on the night, leaving the final tied 2-2 on aggregate.

Limerick goalkeeper Jimmy Fyffe saved Derry’s final two penalty kicks in the shoot-out, from Eddie McCallion and Gareth Mullan to secure victory for the Shannonside club.

APRIL 11th 1990 – (17 years ago)

Derry City defeated Saint Patrick’s Athletic 4-3 on penalties, in the FAI Cup quarter final replay at Harold’s Cross.

Paul Osam put the Inichicore side in front with the Candy Stripes equalising through an own goal by Pat’s centre half Damien Byrne.

Derry went on to win the penalty shootout 4-3.

APRIL 11th 1933 – (84 years ago)

Derry City defeated Coleraine 4-0 in the final of the North West Senior Cup with goals from John Forster and a hat-trick from former Everton striker Bobby Irvine.

APRIL 12th 1997 – (20 years ago)

Twenty years ago today the first domestic league game was screened live on television by RTE at Tolka Park, Dublin.

The game finished in an entertaining one all draw between Shelbourne and Derry City.

Stephen Geoghegan had given the hosts the lead but a second half effort form Gary Beckett secured a point for the Candy Stripes.

 APRIL 12th 1941 – (76 years ago)

Derry City suffered a heavy defeat, losing 6-2 to Portadown in the Northern Regional League. City’ goals coming from a brace by Jimmy Kelso.

APRIL 13th 1957 – (60 years ago)

Derry City lost two nil to Glenavon in the Irish Cup Final at Windsor Park, in front of 23,000 supporters. An own goal from former Linfield full-back Tommy Houston and a strike from Irish League legend Jimmy Jones secured the win for the Lurgan Blues.

APRIL 13th 1994 – (23 years ago)

Donal O’Brien scored the only goal of the game to to defeat Bohemians in the semi-final of the FAI Cup at Dalymount Park.

APRIL 13th 1935 – (82 years ago)

Eighty two years ago Derry City defeated Larne 6-1 at Brandywell in the City Cup competition. A hat-trick from ex-Partick Thistle forward Archie McLeod was added to by effort’s from Hughie Carlyle, Harry Duffy and Jimmy Kelly.

APRIL 14th 1932 – (85 years ago)

Derry City won their first ever senior trophy eighty five years ago today, defeating Coleraine 2-1 in the final of the North West Senior Challenge Trophy. Goals from Kelly and an OG by Mitchell secured a narrow win over the bannsiders.

APRIL 14th 1995 – (22 years ago)

Twenty two years ago today Derry City defeated Bohemians 3-2 at Brandywell in the second replay of the FAI Cup semi-final.

APRIL 16th 1989 – (28 years ago)

Derry City drew 1-1 with Shamrock Rovers at Dalymount Park in the FAI Cup semi-final second leg. The Candy Strips held a three nil lead from the first leg and qualified for the final on an aggregate score of 4-1.

APRIL 16th 1949 – (68 years ago)

Derry City defeated Glentoran 3-1 in the final of the Irish Cup at Windsor Park, Belfast.
