The Derry City Under-17 development squad opened their 2017 SSE Airtricity League Northern Division campaign with a 1-1 draw against Shelbourne at the AUL complex, Dublin on Saturday afternoon.
Manager Gary Duffy travelled to the capital with a host of new signings, in what is virtually a new squad for the 2017 season. Only Carndonagh pair Fionn McClure and Kieran Farren form the 2016 panel were named in the starting eleven, with nine players making their competitive debuts at Under-17 level for the club.
A strike from Ali Reghba was cancelled out by Kieran Farren (pictured) volleying home to secure a point and to make it a solid start to the season for the Candy Stripes.
The Under-17 squad this year includes; Carndonagh goalkeeper Daniel Houghton, Dungloe quartet Ethan Harkin, Calum Boyle, Danny McGlynn and Daniel Ward, former Swilly Rovers forward Mikey Sweeney and local lads Jack Malone, Aaron McGurk and Conor McGowan among others.
Duffy will now turn his attention to preparing his side to face St Patrick’s Athletic in their first home game of the new season, in what is sure to be a stern test for his new-look squad.
