Derry City U17s suffered defeat to Sligo Rovers in the semi-final of the Mark Farren Memorial Cup at Maginn Park on Monday evening.

Two first half strikes by Mark Byrne and Darren Collins gave Danny O’Leary’s side control of the contest at the break and despite their best efforts Gary Duffy’s outfit were unable to breach a resolute Rovers defence.

Sligo Rovers will be away to Waterford FC in the final.

Derry City U17s booked a place in the semi-finals of the Mark Farren Memorial Cup following a thrilling 5-2 win over Dundalk at the Vale Centre on Tuesday evening.

Two one down at the break, Gary Duffy’s men produced a superb second half comeback to blow the Lilywhites out of the water, scoring four goals without reply.

City took the lead on 9 minutes when the visiting keeper was penalised for carrying outside the area. Up stepped midfielder Jack Malone to thunder a low drive into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Derry almost doubled their lead within a minute when Finn McClure set up Aaron McGurk but the big striker’s left footed effort sailed over the crossbar.

Dundalk did manage to level the game four minutes later when captain Mark Traynor headed home a corner at the near post.

Before the Lilywhites went in front Derry had good chances of their own to score. A snapshot from 12 yards by McGurk was superbly turned round the post. Moments later Caolan McLaughlin was sent clear but shot straight at the keeper after great work on the edge of the box between McGurk and Farren.
